South Africa's Most Beautiful Safaris
South Africa ranks among the world's premier destinations for an unforgettable wildlife safari experience.
South Africa ranks among the world's premier destinations for an unforgettable wildlife safari experience. Its national parks and private reserves are home to countless wild animals, and you're virtually guaranteed to spot the legendary Big 5—and even the Big 7 in certain parks. Here's your guide to South Africa's most spectacular safaris.
1. Kruger National Park
No list of South Africa's finest safaris would be complete without the iconic Kruger National Park, located in the country's northeast, roughly five hours' drive from Johannesburg. Spanning approximately 20,000 km², it's one of Africa's largest wildlife reserves and the most significant in South Africa. Its reputation makes it one of the country's most visited parks.
Wildlife at Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park is the premier destination for observing the legendary Big 5. The park is home to 1,500 lions, 12,000 elephants, 2,500 buffalo, 1,000 leopards, and both white and black rhinoceroses. You'll also find nearly 150 species of mammals including giraffes, antelopes, zebras, and African wild dogs, plus over 500 bird species.
Best Season for a Kruger National Park Safari
Kruger can be visited year-round. That said, we recommend visiting between November and December during the birthing season. Note that the rainy season runs from November through March.
2. Manyeleti Game Reserve
Manyeleti Game Reserve borders Kruger National Park. This reserve is an excellent choice for an African safari experience because it shares the same impressive wildlife populations as Kruger (there's no fence between them) without the tourist crowds. Beyond being more intimate, this private reserve is renowned for its luxury eco-lodges.
Wildlife at Manyeleti Game Reserve
Like neighboring parks and reserves, you can see the Big 5 here. In total, Manyeleti Game Reserve is home to 146 mammal species, 120 reptile species, and 520 bird species.
Best Season for a Manyeleti Game Reserve Safari
If considering weather alone, the best time to visit is the dry season (March to November). Bird enthusiasts should opt for the wet season (November to April) to observe both resident and migratory species.
3. Timbavati Game Reserve
Another private reserve bordering Kruger Park with no fenced boundaries, the Timbavati Game Reserve sprawls across more than 50,000 hectares of wooded grassland teeming with wild animals. It's ideal for those seeking an unforgettable safari far from tourist crowds.
Wildlife at Timbavati Game Reserve
While the Big 5 is a major draw, Timbavati Game Reserve is particularly famous for its rare white lion population. This exceptional species was discovered in the 1970s, though it's sadly endangered today. You'll also encounter over 40 mammal species (zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas, African wild dogs…) and more than 350 bird species!
Best Season for a Timbavati Game Reserve Safari
Like Kruger Park and Manyeleti, Timbavati can be visited year-round. To observe big cats, we recommend visiting during the dry season between June and October. For birdwatching, favor the wet season from October through April.
4. Addo Elephant National Park
Located in the country's south, within the Sundays River Valley, Addo Elephant National Park offers countless surprises. Bordered by the ocean, it uniquely harbors the Big 7—the seven largest animal species in Africa. On land, the park covers 12,000 hectares of bush, making it South Africa's 3rd largest park.
Wildlife at Addo Elephant National Park
Addo Elephant is renowned for its many elephants, lions, black rhinoceroses, Cape buffalo, leopards, antelopes, and hyenas. What makes this safari distinctive is the presence of the Big 7, featuring the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) and the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). You may also spot numerous dolphins, and with luck, humpback whales and Bryde's whales.
Best Season for an Addo Elephant National Park Safari
Addo Elephant can be visited throughout the year. However, if you wish to maximize your chances of spotting whales, we recommend visiting between June and November.
5. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve
Welcome to Africa's oldest wildlife reserve! Founded in 1895, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi lies at the heart of KwaZulu Natal province. Through its savanna-covered hills roam countless wild animals awaiting discovery on safari. The reserve is particularly renowned for its crucial work protecting rhinoceroses.
Wildlife at Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve
Thanks to dedicated conservation and reintroduction efforts, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi boasts the world's largest concentration of rhinoceroses. The reserve is home to over 1,600 white rhinos and more than 370 black rhinos. You'll also find the Big 5, plus giraffes, African wild dogs, nyalas (a rare antelope species), hippopotamuses, wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, elands, kudus, crocodiles, warthogs, and baboons. The reserve also features over 300 bird species!
Best Season for a Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve Safari
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi can be visited year-round. The ideal season for safari is the dry season from May to October, when animals congregate around increasingly scarce water sources.
