Located in the Drakensberg Mountains, Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga stretches for 26 km and plunges nearly 800 meters deep! Curious to discover this third largest canyon in the world? Best viewpoints, trails and practical information: here's our complete guide for a successful road trip along South Africa's Panorama Road.

How to visit Blyde River Canyon (Panorama Road)?

The Blyde River Canyon is intimately linked to the "Panorama Road". While it is indeed a destination in its own right, the name Blyde River Canyon is commonly used to refer to a remarkable region!

This famous road, which runs along the high plateaus of the Drakensberg, features numerous panoramic views and waterfalls. The route outlined here begins at Mac-Mac Falls (near the town of Graskop, considered the main starting point for the circuit) and ends at the Three Rondavels viewpoint.

Mac Mac Falls
Blyde River Canyon and Panorama Road: practical tips for a successful visit!

Mac-Mac Falls form a stunning 80-meter waterfall in the heart of a verdant valley. Declared a national monument, the Mac Mac Falls cascade down an abrupt cliff face and offer the opportunity to swim in their Mac Mac Pools – beautiful natural swimming areas perfect for cooling off during the dry season. You can also picnic at the site and take a short 3 km walk in the surrounding area.

Pilgrim's Rest

Pilgrim's Rest is a unique stop on Panorama Road. Unlike other sites, this is not a natural spot but a former gold miners' village…

This protected site (also declared a national monument in 1986) offers a glimpse into the past. Why? The operation of this small town – built in the 1870s – closed in 1971 and has remained untouched ever since!

The Pinnacle Rock

Close to Graskop, The Pinnacle Rock is quite singular. It is a solitary rocky outcrop rising in the midst of the canyon's gorges! Observing this massive rock pinnacle, you'll enjoy an unobstructed view across Mpumalanga province.

It's also an opportunity to stop in the forest town of Graskop... Its special feature? A stunning glass elevator that descends 51 meters along the cliff!

God's Window

God's Window is considered one of the most spectacular viewpoints over Blyde River Canyon, with its breathtaking 700-meter vertical drop and 360° panorama! When skies are clear, you can see Kruger National Park in the distance.

To reach it, you'll walk through a small tropical forest (rainforest), featuring numerous endemic plant species. The climb is somewhat steep in places, but accessible to all hikers.

Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls
Blyde River Canyon and Panorama Road: practical tips for a successful visit!

Lisbon Falls represent the highest waterfall in the region. At 94 meters tall, they form a magnificent curtain of water, easily accessible from the car park (just 100 meters' walk from your vehicle).

Nearby, you'll find Berlin Falls (both waterfalls bear the names of European cities, supposedly because of foreign gold miners – though nothing is certain on this subject). Standing at 80 meters, it resembles a candle melting when viewed from afar… A trail allows you to descend and get closer to it.

Bourke's Luck Potholes

The Bourke's Luck Potholes viewpoint offers a singular panorama. Carved by torrents over centuries, the cliffs have gradually sculpted rocky labyrinths of exceptional beauty.

These geological formations (nicknamed "the kettles") are combinations of arches, sandstone slabs and cavities, making Bourke's Luck Potholes a unique and unmissable stop!

Flat sections allow you to approach water features (but note that swimming is forbidden here). A secret? The site is particularly beautiful in late afternoon as the sun sets.

Blyde River Canyon

The penultimate stop on this road trip: the famous canyon itself. This natural gem stretches 26 km and is traversed by the Blyde River, with well-maintained facilities that allow you to make the most of the site.

This natural attraction is home to numerous hiking trails (see below). One tip: keep an eye on your belongings, as monkeys frequently attempt to pilfer visitors' possessions!

Three Rondavels

With its three rocky massifs shaped like rondavels (traditional African structures), the Three Rondavels panoramic view is one of the most famous – and also one of the most popular. These three huts bear the names of three women of a former regional chief: Magabolle, Mogoladikwe and Maserato!
