Langa

Langa is a township located in the suburbs of Cape Town. Its name in Xhosa means Sun. Spend a half-day visiting Langa accompanied by your local English-speaking guide. It is the oldest black African township in Cape Town, and was a site of significant resistance against the apartheid regime.

Masiphumelele

Masiphumelele is one of the smallest townships in Cape Town, Afrique du Sud, located near Kommetjie. Originally known as Site 5, the township was renamed Masiphumelele by its inhabitants, a Xhosa word meaning We will succeed.

In the early 1980s, a group of 400 to 500 Black residents established the first informal settlement in the bushland near where Masiphumelele stands today. Under Apartheid laws, these families were forcibly removed repeatedly. Later, they were told this area was reserved for Black workers, but they were required to live in the poorly developed township of Khayelitsha, over 30 kilometers away. Those who had found work in the Fish Hoek area attempted many times to return to their former homes.

Khayelitsha

Khayelitsha means New home in Xhosa. One of the best ways to see and discover Khayelitsha is to walk through the township and interact with its residents. Walking tours, guided by your local guide, are well known not only for showing visitors the townships, but also for engaging travelers in creating sustainable and positive change in the community. This is done through planting vegetable gardens, creating street art, and much more. Through this, your local guide—a highly respected community member—enables visitors to connect with residents on a meaningful level. Tours are customized to match your interests, whether sport, healthcare, food, or simply gaining insight into daily township life.
