Eco-lodge in rondavels within the private Timbavati reserve, at the heart of the Greater Kruger. Solar-powered, unfenced camp offering walking safaris and a waterhole hide.

Umlani Bushcamp is an eco-lodge nestled in the central section of the Timbavati Private Reserve, at the heart of the Greater Kruger National Park. An unfenced camp powered by solar energy and built from natural materials, it offers a bush immersion designed with responsible tourism principles at its core.

Why choose Umlani Bushcamp

In 1993, the fences separating Timbavati from the Kruger National Park were removed, integrating the reserve into the Greater Kruger National Park and enabling wildlife to move freely. Umlani occupies this territory with an integration logic rather than development: no fence around the camp, structures built from natural materials, solar power with backup generator.

This ecological commitment manifests concretely in the camp's daily operations. The deliberately modest size, absence of unnecessary frills, and attentiveness to local wildlife make Umlani an address for travellers seeking an understated safari, free from ostentation.

Atmosphere and architecture

The camp is built in traditional African style, around rondavels constructed from natural materials that blend seamlessly into the bush. No concrete, no fencing: come nightfall, animals move freely through the camp. For guests' safety, camp staff escort clients between the rondavels, dining area, and bar.

Lighting relies on solar torches provided in each room, usable indoors and to navigate the pathways. The whole creates a raw, hushed atmosphere, worlds away from the sanitised lodges of the mainstream circuit.

The rondavels

Accommodation is in rondavels, positioned near communal areas. Each room is equipped with a charging station for phones and cameras, powered by solar energy — guests are asked not to plug in hairdryers or razors, as the system cannot handle high loads. A bottle of mineral water is replenished daily in each room.

For travellers wishing to push the experience further, the camp offers, weather and availability permitting, a night in a treehouse. Booking can be made in advance or upon arrival, without guarantee.

Activities and services

  • Bush walks: guided walks led by a ranger, tailored to each participant's fitness level. Timings vary according to weather and wildlife presence, with an approach centred on tracking and flora.
  • Waterhole hide: between breakfast and lunch, a hide allows observation of wildlife coming to drink.
  • Included beverages: soft drinks, juices, beers, and house red and white wines from local brands. A selection of Stellenbosch wines is also offered and paired with evening menus.
  • Water: tap water is potable but hard and distinctly flavoured; mineral water is provided in rooms and for safaris, with refill stations at the dining area and bar.

Location

Umlani sits off the beaten track, in the centre of the Timbavati Private Reserve, one of the private reserves integrated into the Greater Kruger. Access is typically by domestic flight to Hoedspruit, followed by a road transfer of approximately one hour to the camp.
