5-star lodge in the private Timbavati reserve, bordering the Kruger: 4x4 safaris, walking safaris and all-inclusive package.

Kambaku River Sands is a 5-star lodge located in the private nature reserve of Timbavati, on the western edge of Kruger National Park. The reserve is open and unfenced, sharing a common border with Kruger: wildlife moves freely between the two territories, making it prime viewing ground for the Big 5.

Why choose Kambaku River Sands

The lodge operates on an all-inclusive basis and centers its offer around one core product: guided safari in a private reserve. Three elements set it apart:

  • A location within Timbavati, one of the few reserves where you can hope to encounter white lions, alongside leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants and buffalo.
  • Rare species observable here: African wild dogs, aardvarks (nocturnal animals rarely spotted elsewhere).
  • A package that includes two daily safaris, meals, beverages and lodge hospitality.

The positioning remains luxury, with premium pricing consistent with private lodge standards in the Greater Kruger area.

Atmosphere and architecture

The lodge is built along a riverbed, with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows facing the bush. The architecture emphasizes transparency between interior and exterior: communal spaces open onto the surrounding landscape, and campfires serve as the evening gathering point. Dinners are served outdoors, along the riverbed, around campfires, or under cover depending on the season.

Activities and services

The day revolves around two guided outings, led by reserve rangers.

Morning safari

Departure just before sunrise, after coffee or tea served at the lodge. This is the most active period for wildlife: predators still on the move, light optimal for observation. Return to the lodge for brunch.

Evening safari

High tea is served before departure in mid-afternoon. The outing extends past sunset with a sundowner (drinks in the wild), followed by a night drive with spotlights to identify nocturnal species. Return to the lodge precedes dinner.

Walking safari

The lodge also offers a walking safari led by a ranger, an alternative to 4x4 outings. The pace is slower, focused on reading tracks, vegetation and small wildlife. Can be arranged on-site depending on daily conditions.

Location and access

Kambaku River Sands is located in the northern section of the Timbavati reserve, in Limpopo province. Access is typically via Hoedspruit Airport (Eastgate), the nearest, with approximately one hour by road to the lodge. From Johannesburg, allow a full day's drive or take a domestic flight. Many travelers combine Timbavati with other stops in South Africa's northeast: Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, scenic route.
