Honeyguide Khoka Moya Lodge
Canvas camp in the Manyeleti private reserve, adjacent to Kruger: 15 tents of 50 m², guided safaris and full board in the heart of the bush.
Honeyguide Khoka Moya is a canvas camp set in the Manyeleti private reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Fifteen spacious tents, meals included in full board and guided outings led by experienced rangers: this lodge focuses on true bush immersion, with no fence between the camp and wildlife.
Why stay here
Manyeleti, which means "place of stars" in Shangaan, shares its borders with Kruger without any barrier: wildlife moves freely between the two zones. The reserve remains little visited, which radically changes the safari experience compared to the park's public areas. The camp is designed to disappear into its surroundings, with a reception hall built from recycled wood and thatched roof, and a large pool regularly visited by elephants coming to drink.
Atmosphere
The tents are pitched on either side of a river, in vegetation typical of the lowveld. In the evening, meals are taken at a long communal table, lit by torches and wood fires. The spirit is that of a classic bush camp: you hear the sounds of the African night from your terrace, guides recount the day's outings, and the rhythm follows that of wildlife (pre-dawn wake-up for safari, midday rest, second drive in late afternoon).
Accommodation
The lodge has 15 independent luxury tents, each offering a living area of 50 m² and capacity for 3 to 4 people. Amenities include:
- Four-poster beds or twin beds, mosquito nets and fan
- Two bathrooms per tent, with sinks and flush toilets
- A sitting area with sofa and desk
- A panoramic terrace open to the bush
The tents close with doors and shutters at night, a standard feature in unfenced camps.
Services and dining
Your stay includes full board, with cuisine based on local ingredients served at a communal table. The camp also features a bar, lounge, and the pool already mentioned. Activities are led by experienced rangers:
- 4x4 safaris in the Manyeleti reserve
- Walking safaris with armed guide
- Bush walks to read tracks and vegetation
- Bird watching (over 300 species recorded in the area)
Location
The camp is located in the central sector of Manyeleti, accessible by road from Hoedspruit (nearest airport, about 1.5 hours by dirt track) or by flight from Johannesburg. Proximity to Kruger makes it easy to combine with other stops in Limpopo or Mpumalanga province.
When to go
The dry season, from May to September, is the most favorable period for observing large mammals: vegetation clears, and wildlife concentrates around permanent water points. Daytime temperatures are mild and cool at dawn. The rainy season, from November to March, offers lush vegetation, arrival of migratory birds and antelope births; wildlife is more dispersed but landscapes are spectacular.
Nearby
To extend or complement your stay around Kruger and its private reserves, several addresses are worth considering:
- Kambaku River Sands, another camp in a private reserve of greater Kruger
- Sausage Tree Safari Camp, in the same spirit of canvas camp
- Blyde River Canyon Lodge, for a scenic stop on the Panorama Route
- Chinderera Eco Lodge, an eco-responsible alternative
